The Black Archives / New Urban Collective

The Black Archives is a historical archive with 3000 books from black and other perspectives that are often neglected, like racism, race issues, slavery, (de)colonization, gender, feminism, Surinam, Dutch Antilles, South America, Africa and more. 
The collections offer literature that is not often discussed at schools and universities. The Black Archives include the Heilbron, Huiswouds, Willemse and Vereniging Ons Suriname collections and is initiated by Jessica de Abreu, Mitchell Esajas, Miguel Heilbron and Thiemo Heilbron, managed by New Urban Collective and supported by Association Our Surinam (Vereniging Ons Suriname), located in Amsterdam. Association Our Surinam was the first Surinam association in the Netherlands, formed in 1919 from the Surinamese Workers Union. Our Surinam opposed Dutch colonial politics and condemned the war in the East Indies between 1949-1949. The association also focussed on cultural emancipation and joined the international Black Power movement. New Urban Collective (NUC) is a social enterprise to empower the young from different backgrounds and improve their position.
